The Southerner

There is a very small difference between 2014 and 2015, however once 2016 hit the hate-crimes soared. More than 200 of the crimes happened after Donald Trump’s election, and most of those were done in his name. Trump has said ‘Sometimes it’s the reverse, to make people — or to make others — look bad,’ in response to the rise in Anti-Semitism. He thinks that the bomb threats were made by Jewish people, or those who support them, to make him and his supporters look bad.

This is a primary example of a sign that can be used instead of one that states my uterus my choice. In theory, if a Day Without Women was executed properly. 47% of the workforce would be missing, an action that could severely impact peoples everyday lives.

Samara Adam, Staff Writer March 7, 2017

As inclusive as South may be, I’ve noticed it is lacking in certain communities. South students would greatly benefit from more religious based groups. Faith is a large part of many people’s lives,...

17 to 23 million animals are used in the United States for biomedical research each year, and that number is on the decline. The vast majority of these animals are mice, rats, fish, or birds. Animals used in biomedical research should be the least of our animal welfare concerns. Nearly ten billion animals are killed for food in the U.S. each year making the number of animals used in research appear rather insignificant. Statistics used in the graphic are from the Hastings Center in 2010. Graphic: Madeline Mahoney

The diversity at South is in fact very large, however, the diversity among students doesnt reflect the diversity of teachers. Roughly 56,000/58,000 teachers are white in the state of Minnesota as of 2014. We have to do better to show our students of color that its possible to be a teacher, otherwise the cycle will continue. Data from Minneapolis Public School report of the annual racial and ethnic count of students.

Many South students feelings are heightened after the recent election, and have been reacting in various ways, such as writing on the walls, and protesting. One things for sure, violence and harassment in this time after the election are not acceptable solutions and we have to do better and be more welcoming of everyone at our school. Otherwise, we have to stop pretending that our diversity means anything.
