Who lives in a pineapple under the sea, and now also in room 206B on Tuesdays after school? The new South High SpongeBob Club, which started in March, gathers weekly to celebrate the beloved 1999 television series, SpongeBob SquarePants. The founders of the club, Ramaas Said and Meilla Corkill-Bomgaars (both juniors), believe South High needs more excitement and seek to achieve that by creating an opportunity for students to participate in a unique and entertaining club.
Ever since their childhood, Corkill-Bomgaars and Said have had a strong love for SpongeBob and now want to share their love to the South community. And while it may not seem like a serious club, Said and Corkhill-Bomgaars are taking things very seriously and have a lot planned for the club. “Every week, we’re gonna watch an episode of peoples’ choice. Mostly, really good episodes, though,” described Corkill-Bomgaars, Vibe President of the club. “And we’re also gonna play Kahoots on those days. And then on separate days, we’re gonna plan some fun stuff, like decorating cookies, making shirts, or coloring.” President Said remarked, “We just want our club members to have fun. We also really want to just reach out to a lot of people throughout the school.”
Inspiration struck Said around the beginning of March, and it didn’t take long for the plan to come into action. “It literally all happened in one day. Starting the club was easy. I knew Meilla and I would be committed to it. It was just finding out a possible teacher who would let us use their room.” Once they found Ms. Anab and she was on board, they were able to go talk to the Beacons leader, Annie. Said and Corkill-Bomgaars were then confirmed to start their club in Ms. Anab’s room (206B) on Tuesdays after school.
Since their first meeting on March 11, SpongeBob Club has been a popular destination for both SpongeBob enthusiasts and people looking for something to do after school. Even if you know nothing about SpongeBob, don’t let that stop you from coming! Corkill-Bomgaars said, “We want everyone to join, no matter who you are.” Said added, “As long as you just like SpongeBob or want to know about SpongeBob.” So next time you find yourself free on a Tuesday afternoon, mosey on over to room 206B to celebrate the world’s most loved sponge!
