MPS votes to terminate contract with Minneapolis Police Department

During the Board of Education meeting at 5pm on Tuesday, June 2nd, the Minneapolis school board voted unanimously to terminate their contract with the Minneapolis Police Department. The resolution was announced on May 26 in response to the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers who have since been fired. As stated in the resolution, “recent actions of officers in the Minneapolis Police Department run directly counter to the values the District seeks in partners.”

The district’s Superintendent has until August 18 to introduce an alternative plan to maintain safety in Minneapolis schools that does not involve School Resource Officers.
