The time for students to pick their elective classes has come. As students have to balance out their schedules for their future classes to make sure they’re getting their credits. South High offers a lot of elective classes, including: languages, visual and performing arts, Avid and newspaper. With the recent elective fair, students were able to check up on some of the classes that south has to offer, with students giving their first hand experience in the classes. A lot of students have still not made their pick for their electives next year.

But what do students think about when choosing elective classes?

The perspectives of students picking their elective classes has a lot to do with their grade level. Senior Margret Walkers reflected on when she picked her current classes during her junior year. Walker says that when she thought about picking her classes she worried about what she would be missing out on. Walkers decided that she wanted to drop her band class because she wasn’t as passionate about it as she was in her other classes.  “I decided I wanted to experience more,” she stated which led to her love of visual arts in which she picked mostly all art classes and felt it was the right choice.

Jade Albers, a sophomore said she did switch her electives for next year, so that she can challenge herself to take AP classes and get college credits. Albers also specified that there are no classes that she regrets taking; most of the classes are worth the effort. Albers said that South has a lot of great elective classes but it is unfortunate that a lot of them got cut. The art classes are most of the classes that were cut from electives, despite them being pretty popular among the students.

Marci Yac, another sophomore at South High who visited the elective fair commented on her choices for her new electives. Yac switched her classes because she wanted to try something new. she said, “they (south elective classes) give you more opportunity to express yourself.” While picking her classes Yac wanted to figure out the best way to express herself.

Popular electives seem to be art courses. Many students also want to challenge themselves with advanced math and science classes. With all this being said, students seem to appreciate that electives South has to offer and sees it has been important to their education, many of the South classes help students shape their future. Choosing electives is just as important as having core classes.
