What is fanart? Fan art is a piece of art, made by a fan, depicting things like characters, themes, or scenes from a movie, TV show, book, manga, etc. Within the artsy fartsy confines of South High, there are plenty of aspiring young artists, and amongst those, many fanart artists. We asked some artists at South a few questions about their art.

Q: Why do you make fan art?

Dezzy Boswell: I do fan art because I love to draw, and I like to create my own visual interpretations of things I enjoy.

Maddy Heywood: Usually it’s because I get attached to the characters and the story, I do original art and stuff like that, but I prefer to do fan art because I tend to get really attached to the stories…and it’s really fun to adapt characters into your own style when you are an artist.

Autumn LeBeau: Because I get really interested in certain series and, I don’t know, books, comics and stuff, I get really invested into them and characters and want to draw the characters because I like them.

Q: What different shows and movies do you do fan art for? What type do you do?

DB: I do art for Steven Universe and Pokemon, lately.

MH: Pretty much anything that I’m interested in, which is mostly comic books and mangas. Sometimes movies and books, but mostly manga

AL: I really like the Avengers so I draw fan art for that and for webcomics like Eva’s Demon and Homestuck…and sometimes anime. I digitally draw fan art and traditionally draw fan art, by hand.

Q: How many pieces of fan art do you think you’ve done?

DB: Too many to count.

MH: At least 300, probably more. I draw all the time, everyday, so, a lot. I’ve been doing fan art since 8th grade, and I’m a junior now, so a lot.

AL: A lot. It’s all I ever draw so I don’t know how to quantify that.

Q: What have been your favourite things to do fanart for?

MH: One Piece, which is an anime, and Homestuck, which is a webcomic.

Q: What else can you tell me about fan art?

MH: It’s a pretty free practice and, like, pretty anyone can do it, even if you don’t think you’re, like, talented at art, you can still do it because it’s fun
