The South High Jazz Combo’s central members are Cole Nelson, Josh Johnson, Jack Hedburg, Seamus Hawley, Charlie Lincoln, and Angelo Kelvakis. For school sanctioned events and gigs, given to them by Mr. Carter (South music teacher) they go as the South High Jazz Combo. For any gigs they are able to get themselves they go as the Cole Nelson Sextet. The Jazz Combo, unlike the entire jazz band, is much smaller and much easier to move around and play at smaller locations such as coffee shops.

Senior Angelo Kelvakis has stated that being in the Jazz Combo is a “really sweet experience,” giving him and his band mates the chance to play outside the school environment. Kelvakis believes that jazz is a free form of music and he enjoys playing in the jazz combo, however Kelvakis believes that playing at Super Soccer Saturday didn’t feel right. He believes that jazz should be more indoors and an outdoor sporting event is more of a job for the pep band.

Junior Seamus Hawley believe the Jazz Combo is a way to take charge and “get a say in what [they] do,” and control where they play and what they play. The Cole Nelson Sextet has already played for numerous friends and families, and for graduations and parties. The Cole Nelson Sextet will also be trying to play at the Riverview Theater in between movies.

The new Jazz Combo has just started up. They played at Ms. Saddler’s going away party. Scott Carter, who is in charge of the Jazz Combo, decides if and where he wants the Jazz Combo to play. However, people call about twice a week to request the combo, according to Carter, so the Jazz combo has plenty of opportunities to play.
