After their first taste of the Southerner last spring, senior Perry Fernands is back and ready for more. Class solidarity is an important value to them, and they hope to write some stories about the people’s struggle this year in newspaper. As a member of SMASH, South’s progressive student organization, Perry is no stranger to the world of social justice. They also enjoy rollerblading, soup, fluffy baguettes, and sipping the tears of Jeff Bezos.

After the Minneapolis Public School Board voted to terminate their contract with the Minneapolis Police Department, a decision that led some folks to believe that SROs and police in MPS might be coming to a close, they started to hire “Public Support Safety Specialists” or PSSS-- a role which is presumed to continue the policing in MPS.

Protestors interrupted Walz’ speech at the U of MN Humphrey School of Public Affairs on February 21st, 2020 due to his lack of action to prosecute police for murdering many individuals throughout his first year in office, and his hesitancy to stop the Line 3 pipeline.

Members of the South community watch films created by the VOICES class. VOICES is a semester-long, media-based course for seniors at South, and is currently taught by teachers Delainia Haug and Laura Lanik. Haug, the person who conceived of the course, described its purpose as “[giving] seniors an opportunity to express their own passions around social justice topics through digital media production.”
