Upcoming events for Black History Month

February is Black History month and UMOJA is preparing to celebrate. The student lead group at South s hosting several events this February.

    The first week of February UMOJA will be setting out a table in the commons during lunch everyday and they will be having a Jeopardy-like game, to bring awareness and for students to learn more about Black history month. Students will be able to win candy if they play the game.

February 11th is National African American Parent Involvement Day. UMOJA is inviting all African American parents at South high school to come. Students will give the parents a tour of the school, have several speakers, and provide lunch.

On February 28th, UMOJA will be hosting an event in the auditorium called ‘Different Shades of Black.’ The auditorium event will consist of a fashion show, poetry (like a spoken word), African dancing, and storytelling to conclude the show. The poetry portion of the show will have students sharing their poems that they wrote individually or with a friend. UMOJA members will be performing East andWest African dancing and hip hop.

Amatullah Muhammad, president of UMOJA, said that this event is “to educate people about African American culture.”
