Basketball & Track

Jaylen Blakley has been playing basketball for South since eighth grade and started track his sophomore year.

From his freshman to senior year, the basketball community’s success has improved on and off the court, from game attendance to players coming out for the team. “We’re just trying to keep everybody involved, not only on the court but off the court too,” said Blakley. The upperclassmen on the team do their best to support the younger players on the team. “We’re helping the underclassmen get to class, helping if they need rides home and everything.”

When it comes to how he feels about it being his last year playing basketball for South, he wants to leave a mark on the younger players. “I just want to pass on the work ethic to people younger than me,” said Blakley.

Blakley’s competitive side comes out when he gets on the basketball court. “I’m very competitive. I hate losing, if we lose I don’t talk…” said Blakley.

He will be going to college for basketball but will miss home games here at South or the road trips the team took for tournaments. “Those [trips] were actually fun,” said Blakley.
