Grace Bischoff is a senior returning to the Southerner for her 3rd year as the Managing and News Editor. This year, she hopes to learn more about the people and activities at South through journalism, while also helping other staff writers learn and develop their journalism skills. In her free time, Bischoff enjoys hanging out with friends, spending time in nature, biking, and going for walks. She can also be found playing tennis and in NHS.

Irelands classroom is one of many within the second floor maze that gets little to no natural sunlight. The lack of sunlight within the school has negative ramifications upon the mental health of many students and staff alike.

Minneapolis Public Schools has made the decision to move to online learning for two weeks through January 27th. Students are encouraged to stay home, although the school is remaining open for support to students that need it. This decision was made because of the rising number of covid cases, specifically from the omicron variant. Local hip hop artist, Chadwick Niles Phillips, ‘Niles’ taught students in South music departments about hip hop, music and how to unlock their own creative power. He is passionate about spreading a message of positivity in the hip hop movement. “[hip hop] being multicultural, it brings everyone together, if you look all around the world, you see people from all walks of life you see people that are connected to hip hop,” he remarked.

Members of the South community were polled on how much they believe in the responsibility of Trump versus individuals for the insurrection. The 89 individuals polled averaged a higher belief in Trump’s responsibility than individual action. However, Trump faces no consequences for his incitement of violence at the capitol. “I don’t think it should be pardoned. I do think it was treason. I think it was hateful and disgusting, and disheartening,” said sophomore English teacher Ms. Hodge.
